(Sacramento, CA) - The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), California’s independent, nonpartisan political watchdog, today announced the appointment of Charlene Zettel as Vice Chair. In this role, she will preside over Commission meetings in the absence of the Chair and provide support to advance the FPPC’s mission of promoting integrity, transparency, and public trust in California’s political process.

Zettel, a trailblazer in California politics, made history as the first Republican Latina elected to the State Assembly, where she represented the 75th District from 1998 to 2002. She advanced legislation to protect seniors, children, and Californians with developmental disabilities, while also serving as Republican Caucus Chair and Vice Chair of the Jobs and Economic Development Committee.

“With Charlene Zettel’s appointment, the FPPC continues its long-standing tradition of bipartisan leadership,” stated FPPC Chair Adam E. Silver. “Together we reflect the Commission’s true strength - independence and balance. Our role is to remain a nonpartisan body committed to fair, impartial oversight and to strengthening public trust in California’s political process,” Chair Silver continued.

“It’s an honor to serve as Vice Chair of the FPPC,” said Charlene Zettel. “I look forward to working alongside my colleagues, across party lines, to strengthen transparency, accountability, and trust in California’s government.”

The FPPC is a five-member, nonpartisan commission responsible for enforcing California’s landmark Political Reform Act, which governs campaign finance, lobbying, conflicts of interest, and ethics in government. Commissioners are appointed by the Governor (two seats), State Controller, Attorney General, and Secretary of State to four-year terms beginning after each presidential election.

The mission of the Fair Political Practices Commission is to promote the integrity of state and local government in California through fair, impartial interpretation and enforcement of political campaign, lobbying and conflict of interest laws.
